Bistrotheque Studio East Project

SCA Pro-tect Shrink Wrapping Specialists, a division of the SCA Group, are proud to have been a key contributor to the recently completed Studio East Project at the Westfield Stratford City site, the gateway to the 2012 Olympic Park in East London. Situated high above Westfield’s 1.9 million sq ft site, this stunning project has resulted in the roof-top restaurant pictured, open for a three week period that provides stunning views overlooking key landmarks of London’s metropolis, from Crystal Palace to Alexandra Palace, Canary Wharf, the Gherkin, Zaha Hadid’s 2012 Aquatics Centre and London’s Olympic Park.

The purpose built pavilion that has been designed by award winning architects, Carmody Groarke (best known to date for their 7/7 memorial in Hyde Park), sits 35m above ground on top of the still under construction three-storey retail mall, which will be the largest shopping centre in Europe when it eventually opens in late 2011. The entire facility was constructed using materials from the Westfield’s Construction Site, including 2,000 scaffolding boards, 3,500 scaffolding poles and reclaimed timber. The structure was then wrapped in SCA Pro-tect shrink wrap sheeting to create the tightly wrapped, aesthetically pleasing finish to the temporary building. The translucent membrane allowed the building to glow when lit up at night, creating a spectacular showpiece. All materials will be re-used on the Westfield Site after the ‘pop-up’ restaurant has closed its doors to diners.

The end result revealed a combination of raw and exposed construction materials and industrial chic dining furniture. The corridor structures provided a breathtaking dining hall with unrivalled views over the city, and with less most definitely being more, the scaffolding, exposed timber and SCA Pro-tect plastic sheeting re-enforced the developmental stage of the overall site where the diners found themselves.

Prominent figures from the worlds of art, design, retail and fashion were among many VIPs to attend the combined launch of Studio East, an art initiative, and the ‘Bistrotheque’ rooftop dining experience. The opening night was hosted by Tracey Emin, Erin O’Conner, Mary Portas, Tom Dixon and Roland Mouret, and they were joined by other luminaries including Pam Hogg, Antony Gormley and Henry Holland. During the evening, winners of each Studio East category were announced with Julian J Smith scooping a £10k bursary for his fashion collection, Lee Broom winning the design section, Laurance Kemball-Cook rewarded for his environmental work, and Tatiana Fernandez victorious in the art category.
